For as much attrition and weirdness that happened in this race, these podiums were not gifts of circumstance.
But the stewards took Hamilton's side, hitting Vettel with a stop-and-go penalty and latterly three points on his licence. "It's done and dusted".
The next Grand Prix will take place in Austria on July 9.
Hamilton finished fifth in Sunday's race, while Vettel was fourth. A headrest problem, which cost him ten seconds in the pits and therefore the chance of winning the race, would not have added to his mood.
Hamilton said: "I think it's just not driver conduct". Some of the things he said on the radio.
"I didn't brake-check him at all. I ran into the back of him".
"I got damage, he risked damage".
You cant rule out further action but I don't think it's very likely.
"Now we have a situation where there is more controversy". But it's heat of the moment stuff.
"To do that I don't understand". Two senior members from other teams - who weren't involved in the incident - told me they felt that way after the race. "I controlled the pace". One of Hamilton's strengths has always been braking and corner entry, and I think that when the track has low grip and when he doesn't have that ultimate peak grip, he's not able to extract the best performance he wants from the combination of the tyres and the track surface. Driving alongside and deliberately driving into a driver and coming away scot-free is a disgrace.
"Luckily we were going slow".
Hamilton was on Vettel's tail on the last lap, but could not overtake. Vettel fell for the bluff and in this instance played the fool, though there's an extremely fine line at the top and while he'll be chastened, he'll also be wiser for the experience. "It says it all".
"I drove alongside obviously to raise my hand". By the time he left the pits after getting a new nose and tires, he had been lapped by almost half the field.
But the dispute didn't end during the race. It is inappropriate behaviour. He said as the leader, there would have been no benefit in doing so. The 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix was, to put it nicely, interesting. I'm willing to sort it out with him.
"The sport needs the rivalry and I think what we've seen today has the ingredient of a great championship".
"Therefore what he did after I don't understand", he admitted. What was a rather staid procession last year transformed into a rollercoaster that was gripping for its entirety.
