During his fight with Conor McGregor, Floyd Mayweather Jr. seemed confident he was going to pull off the victory. He was out of boxing following his defeat of Oscar De La Hoya in 2007 but swiftly agreed to fight Ricky Hatton, before another period of inactivity followed.
And Mayweather took time to reflect after the fight on how his career in the paid ranks began. But I was the better man tonight. McGregor said he likely would clear $100 million, and said he had his accountants on speed dial to make sure it was all collected.
He then simplified his bet to him winning by knockout, but became "pissed" when he had to wait long to place the bet. McGregor bettors were "rewarded" with the emotional high of a potential payday, adding more entertainment to watching the fight.
The Mayweather duel serves as McGregor's first professional boxing match-the entirety of his career has taken place in the Ultimate Fighting Championship organization. And five of McGregor's last six matches, including the Mayweather fight, have been in Nevada. Everyone was rooting for Mayweather.
Conor McGregor was drinking Irish whiskey and acting like he had won.
All that said, no amount of outside factors can excuse the reality that no major releases this weekend managed to connect with audiences in a significant way.
On the other hand, Pakistan World Bocing Council (WBC) silver flyweight champion Muhammad Waseem had predicted that McGregor will see a knock-out from Mayweather. Steve Armour wrote the script, based on a true story, that centers on a salesman-turned-pastor and a group of refugees from Southeast Asia. Though there were no physical blows at those, Mayweather, who has a record of domestic violence, and McGregor exchanged verbal jabs full of profanity, racism, homophobia and misogyny.
Filipino boxing legend: "Respect to McGregor for taking a chance but congrats to Floyd on #50!" According to CNNMoney, industry experts have speculated that the fight could surpass $500 million, which was a record set by the Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight in 2015.
And, who knows. He may venture back into the boxing ring someday if the price is right. Timothy Bradley lost his last fight to Pacquiao last year and announced his retirement earlier this month, as did Juan Manuel Marquez, who won his last fight against Mike Alvarado but could not, at age 43, shake off a knee injury. He absorbed big shots and put up a respectful fight until his stamina waned and Mayweather pounced in the later rounds.
But that was a minor quibble.
In the performance, she was joined by a gospel choir and walked an outdoor runway for her number.
Even the stingiest of haters out there would have a hard time complaining about Saturday's junior middleweight fight at T-Mobile Arena.
"I certainly wouldn't want to be the accountant for Mayweather or McGregor".
In what has to be the biggest single payout in sports history, the 40-year-old Mayweather stands to make a total of $300 million for his win over 29-year-old MMA superstar McGregor. Ozzy Osbourne, P Diddy, William H. Macy, Vanessa Hudgens, Bruce Willis, Charlize Theron and some chap dressed like Chewbacca were among the marquee names in attendance, but the real diehard fight fans were few and far between. "I'd rather be in the position [I was in], needing a guy that's 49-0 than needing a guy that's never boxed before".
