Hamilton dominates first practice at Monza

Championship leader Sebastian Vettel, who currently holds a seven-point advantage, will start fifth after Ferrari struggled to match the pace of their rivals in Q3.

It's also the fourth straight year that Hamilton will start first in Monza and it was his sixth pole overall on the track, breaking another record held by Senna and Juan Manuel Fangio.

The Red Bull pairing of Australian Daniel Ricciardo and Dutch teenager Max Verstappen followed, with both facing grid penalties for Sunday's race, ahead of Force India's Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon.

The next leg of the season, in Asia, promises to be much more difficult to predict. Singapore, a circuit similar to Monaco and Budapest, should favour Ferrari, though Malaysia and Japan have enough high-speed corners that Mercedes should hold the advantage.

This year's event has an added emotional ingredient with the sport's oldest and most successful team celebrating the 70th anniversary of Enzo's first car with their most competitive season in years.

It was a record 69th pole for Hamilton, who just last week in Belgium tied the mark held by Germany's Michael Schumacher.

And he said: "You know what, I love it here in Italy and I love the passion of the fans. The plan is to try to extend it".

"It was clear they were quicker than us today", said Vettel afterwards. Other short odds to win are Sebastian Vettel (+333) and Valtteri Bottas (4/1). "The car felt fantastic". But it is amazing to come and have the back-to-back wins.

"If the chance is there, we will take it, of course", said Vettel, who ended practice a close third behind the two Mercedes.

Hamilton led the way after the opening third of the session, with Mercedes focusing on running the soft tyres early on.

"This is the emotional part".

There's next to nothing for the runner-up.

The last time the Bulls came in the top three in Monza was during Vettel's 2013 win. We did what we could and that's what it's about.

Sweden's Johan Kristoffersson leads his teammate Petter Solberg by 35 points in the World RX. Saturdays, they are very strong.

"For me, it looks like this weekend Ferrari has a step back, somehow".
