Andrew McCutchen collected three hits as Pittsburgh dropped its sixth straight.
The Brewers will open play Monday night four games back of the Cubs in the NL Central and 2 1/2 games back of the Rockies for the second NL wild-card spot. In the past 11 games, the Pirates are averaging two runs a game.
The plays were as devastating to the Pirates as they were uplifting for the Brewers.
"Right out of the hand, I could tell it was a fat pitch", Taillon said.
Tigers reliever Jeff Ferrell left the game in the eighth inning after getting hit in the head with a line drive off the bat off Ryon Healy.
He jogged immediately toward the Detroit dugout and was escorted to the clubhouse.
"I feel strong, I feel healthy, and I think being out with the oblique injury kind of set me up for this".
Pirates starter Jameson Taillon surrendered two runs over five frames to take the loss. While Taillon did not necessarily struggle on Monday night, he did not exactly pitch well either.
Brewers pitcher Brent Suter delivers during the first inning against the Pirates on Monday, Sept. 18, 2017, at PNC Park.
The shutout was the Brewers' 11th of the season as a team after having seven in 2016 - a big reason Milwaukee is 10 games over.500 (80-70) coming down the stretch. On Monday night, however, he had much more success. Ryan Braun was 2-for-3 with a home run and a walk to lead the offense. Neil Walker was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
After he lasted just 4 2/3 innings on Sept. 7 in an 8-2 loss to the Cubs, allowing six runs and 11 hits with three strikeouts and one walk, Taillon was skipped in the rotation. In fact, Pittsburgh has not ended an inning in its last six games. Taillon walked one and struck out four. With one out and two men on base, Travis Shaw hit a ground ball that shortstop Jordy Mercer failed to field. This past Friday, Milwaukee took advantage of an off-day and gave the entire game to its fully rested bullpen. "Another win adds a little more pressure to the teams we're chasing and puts us in a good spot".
Anderson is 5-2 with a 3.20 ERA in 10 career starts against the Pirates. Planco was trying to stretch a single into a double. Then in the 9th, Brett Phillips tossed out Gregory Polanco at second base to end the game.
That's when they'll begin a three-game road series against the Pirates.
