With a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 platform and 8GB RAM as standard, the Razer Phone is just as powerful as some of the top-end flagships out there. Refreshingly, it's not even that expensive. The Ipad Pro uses the exact same display as this new product. An Android Oreo update is scheduled for sometime in the first quarter.
So what does all that mean in practice?
The Razer Phone is a big ol' lump of a phone, thanks to its 5.7-inch 16:9 ratio screen, square shoulders, huge bezels (which houses a dual front-facing speaker array that's Dolby Atmos-certified), and a 4,000mAh battery.
The Razer phone is dedicated to gamers, featuring the world's first 120 Hz screen with ultramotion technology, which syncs the GPU signals with the screen, similar to NVidia's gsync technology, preventing lagging or screen tearing. Talking about the top-notch hardware, there is a 5.7-inch IGZO display on the front offering Quad HD (2560 x 1440 pixels) resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and Wide Color Gamut (WCG). This is great for entertainment, but it will also come into play when you're doing more mundane activities, like scrolling through a website. Razer says the camera has features like portrait mode and seamless zoom.
However, the new screen is no good if game developers are still designing around 60Hz and not maximizing the benefits of being able to display the full 120fps.
To be sure, the Phone won't offer some of the key features those phones offer.
The battery is very generous at 4,000 mAh, and that's exactly what we wanted to see in a device that's heavily geared towards gaming.
The phone also lacks some newer features found on phone models coming out lately, including wireless charging.
Tom Moss, head of Razer's mobile business, said: "We didn't start out trying to make a gaming phone, but rather a phone for gamers". The main f/1.7 aperture camera utilises a wide-angle sensor, while the secondary camera uses a narrower f/2.6 2x telephoto lens, which helps with capturing scenes from further away. Both cameras boast Phase Detection Autofocus.
It also comes with a dual-tone flash for more natural lighting and employs phase-detection autofocus for faster focusing. That's overlaid with the heavily customizable Nova launcher.
And then there's the part that can make or break a flagship smartphone today - the camera.
With support for MicroSD cards, you can expand your storage up to 2GB. You may know Razer from its PCs and console gaming peripherals like awesome laptops, headsets, and controllers. I experienced the benefits of Ultramotion first hand as I ran a few races in Wipeout 2048 and tried the pocket edition of Final Fantasy XV.
- A fingerprint sensor on the power button, which is located on the side of the device's. It says that mobile gaming is getting serious, and it wants to get in on the action.
The Razer Phone will be available later this month for $700.
The device has two volume buttons on one side with the power button on the other side. In the US, it'll be sold unlocked for GSM carriers, but in the UK it will be available on Three as a carrier exclusive. My games, for instance, are generally retro Japanese RPGs that could run on phones two years old.
