After a campaign of public insults against Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Mugabe fires his longtime deputy, later accusing him of plotting to take power via witchcraft.
Emmerson Mnangagwa, a 75-year-old liberation war veteran and stalwart of the ruling ZANU-PF party is to be sworn in as president on Friday.
According to local media reports, Mugabe sent a letter of resignation to the legislature, which the speaker read during the session on Tuesday.

Now that Mugabe has resigned the hope is that the military will allow a genuinely democratic transition to take place. We really appreciate what he did. "We just wanted Mugabe to go.". The joke made the rounds that Zimbabwe was the first nation to be literally a "Banana republic".
On top of this the military and Zanu-PF share a special relationship that has its roots in the liberation struggle. He appears at a graduation ceremony to polite applause.
Workers turned the Christmas lights on early in Africa Unity Square and people climbed aboard armoured vehicles to pose for photographs with soldiers.
That said, we cannot fail to address the hypocrisy of liberals who - when it suits them - can celebrate the manipulation of democratic institutions by unscrupulous people but, when it doesn't suit them, decry the same actions by others.
