Google's Chrome Will Start Removing "Failing" Ads In February

Google had taken a revolutionary step back in June 2017 to introduce an in-built ad-blocker right into Chrome.

Chrome itself is not a Store app. While Microsoft has developed a system, "Centennial", for packaging existing Windows applications and distributing them through the Store-a convenient capability, as it provides centralized upgrading and clean uninstallation-Google is not using that for Chrome. To do so, users have to use ad blocking extensions on Chrome and there has been a sudden surge in the use of such extensions. In 2016, ad block usage went up 30 percent globally year over year, according to one study. The announcement was first spotted by Venturebeat.

Earlier today, Google published a Chrome app in the Windows Store. Ad Standard violations are reported via the Ad Experience Report, and those who have violated the policy can submit their site for revaluation after the problems have been fixed. The February 15 start date for ad-blocking suggests that the feature could release by some mechanism other than a full Chrome version change.

One of the sad truths Microsoft faces with its browsers these days is that more often than not, they are used only once in order to download and install Google Chrome. That's about as effective as actually performing an online search for the Chrome browser, since the outcome is the same. It's a simple app that points you straight to the download page for Chrome. It will also have a couple of new tricks for fighting rogue pop-ups. In the four months after the initial period, that figure drops to 5% before landing at a permanent 2.5% in mid-August 2018.

What will the Coalition of Better Ads do?

"If we can't yell at customers, how will they know we sell products?" said the advertising industry.
