AMD To Begin Distributing Firmware Updates To Patch Spectre Vulnerability

Spectre and Meltdown have been reported as kernel flaws present in a majority of Intel, AMD and Arm processors.

However, Microsoft said in a statement that it is temporarily halting its updates for some older AMD systems after the devices running the chips did not react as well as expected after installing them.

Security researcher Kevin Beaumont has put together a list of antivirus products that are compatible with Microsoft's Spectre and Meltdown updates, and which have set the Windows registry key.

The company is issuing microcode updates which in combination with updates from OS vendors will be delivered to the users via system updates. "And we are working tirelessly on these issues to ensure it stays that way", Krzanich said.

Intel, trying to defuse concern that fixes to widespread chip security vulnerabilities will slow computers, released test results late on Wednesday showing that PCs won't be affected much and promised more information on servers.

"This means the typical home and business PC user should not see significant slowdowns in common tasks such as reading email, writing a document or accessing digital photos". As Microsoft stated, he can quickly jump from one browser tab to another and discover the victim's purpose.

After the bugs were announced last week, AMD declared there is 'near zero risk' to its own processors, partly because of Microsoft's security patches.

These two vulnerabilities can make anyone have access to a computer user's data even if they are not logged in to that particular user's account.

The comments in the blog post "were the clearest signal from Microsoft that fixes for flaws in microchips from Intel and rivals described last week could meaningfully degrade performance", Reuters said. Our current testing indicates that the upcoming Safari mitigations will have no measurable impact on the Speedometer and ARES-6 tests and an impact of less than 2.5% on the JetStream benchmark. The problem was made public on January 3 by the tech website The Register, causing tech firms, particularly Intel, to scramble to disclose more information.

"For small to medium-sized installations and desktop usage I do not believe the performance to be an issue for most workloads".
