Republicans charge bias, legal 'breakdown' in contentious memo on Russia probe

The memo cites FBI Assistant Director Bill Priestap as saying FBI corroboration of the dossier was in its "infancy" when the court authorized the first FISA warrant. But Mr Steele, a longtime FBI source, "had been paid over $160,000 (€128,000) by the Democratic National Committee and the Clinton campaign". Sources told The New York Times on Friday that the Democratic memo also says the FBI informed the FISC that the dossier was politically motivated, but did not reveal which political entity specifically financed it.

Given that FISA warrants must be renewed every 90 days, the memo indicates that the government monitored Page's communications for nearly a year.

[Clinton campaign law firm] Perkins Coie was aware of Steele's initial media contacts because they hosted at least one meeting in Washington 2016 with Steele and Fusion GPS where this matter was discussed. He said he believed the purported bias was a "disgrace" and said certain people should be "ashamed of themselves".

"As the Speaker and former Vice Presidential candidate, Speaker Ryan knows how dangerous it is to jeopardize our intelligence and national security".

The disclosure is likely to further escalate an intra-government conflict that has split the president and law enforcement leaders appointed by him.

Among other accusations, the memo stated Christopher Steele said he was "desperate that Donald Trump not get elected and was passionate about him not being president".

The memos have been subject to multiple Freedom of Information Act requests by news organizations and non-profits.

"The warrant was not based on the dossier", Smith said, claiming there was a "mountain of evidence" that Page had been having improper connections with Russian intelligence operatives. Comey scoffs at memo * Explainer: What is the Nunes memo?

"We fully expect Rod Rosenstein to continue on as the deputy attorney general", he said.

The GOP memo was composed by the staff of House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., and alleges the FBI abused its surveillance authority, particularly when it sought a secret court order to monitor a former Trump campaign adviser, Carter Page.

Nunes on Friday said he had "an obligation to the American people" to release the memo, which he said showed "FISA abuse" by the DOJ and the FBI.

The tweet also puts Trump squarely on the side of the Republican lawmakers who view the memo as a document that exposes the nefarious designs of the FBI.

Rep. Trey Gowdy, a retiring South Carolina Republican member of the intelligence panel, tweeted that he remains "100 percent confident in Special Counsel Robert Mueller".

Yet the memo itself is undermined by the fact that it is a Republican product, written by a congressman known to be very partisan.

Trump's job approval rating is 41.9 percent, according to the Real Clear Politics average of various polls.

The unprecedented move, confirmed by a White House spokesperson and multiple reports, comes as the Mueller investigation zeros in on key figures in Trump's orbit, and as Republicans make sweeping attacks on the nation's premier law enforcement agencies.

It notes that the application also included information regarding Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos, suggesting there was intelligence beyond the dossier in the Page application.
