Tesla's total revenue for 2017 was $11.8 billion, which was also in line with analysts' forecasts. It was in full view this week, in the shape of a red Tesla Roadster, with dummy spaceman at the wheel, orbiting Earth.
Once Model 3 production stabilizes at a weekly rate of 5,000 units, Tesla believes the new vehicle will sport a meaty gross margin of 25%, playing a key role in achieving - and sustaining - positive operating income.
But Starman and the Tesla are still out there, and late Tuesday the second-stage engine gave them a final boost, putting them on a path toward orbit around the sun.
Don't worry about Musk getting by on his modest pay.

Nevertheless, Musk now aims to produce 10,000 Model 3 cars each month by the end of 2018's first quarter, and 20,000 per month by the end of the second quarter.
The self-made billionaire started Zip2 with his brother - a city guide software for newspapers - later selling it for $307 million (£220 million). Musk even managed to scrape, briefly, into profit on those earlier cars, before plunging back into the red for the new model. The company has offered few details, but it's widely assumed that the main application will be processing the algorithms for Tesla's Autopilot software.
Their visit was further rewarded eight minutes after liftoff when two of the rocket's side cores performed a tandem landing at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and generated back-to-back sonic booms during the propulsive descents. He's the world's 40th richest person, worth $21.4 billion, according to Bloomberg. However its solar business appears to be slumping, despite a recent partnership with Home Depot to sell rooftop solar arrays. Speaking on an earnings call, Elon Musk said he expects Tesla to be profitable by the stringent Generally Accepted Accounting Principles this year.

CASH BURN: Tesla has lofty targets, including building a plant in China and launching a small SUV in 2020. This saving is due to the fact that the boosters from the SpaceX rocket can be recovered and reused.
